The Athlone 3/4 marathon is taking place on Sunday October 2. With over 500 people anticipated to take part, benefitting charity Irish Wheelchair Association are looking forward to a great day out. The Athlone 3/4 marathon is a fantastic Dublin City Marathon preparation event. It’s four weeks before the city event and provides an ideal stepping stone from the half-marathon distance. Ireland’s only 3/4 marathon route is 19.664 miles and starts and finishes at the Glasson Hotel and Golf Club. The course takes in magnificent lakeside views around Lough Ree, quiet country roads, and local historical sites.

Much has been written and broadcast over the past week on the impasse between the City Council and the organisers of the now-cancelled Galway City Marathon, which was due to take place at the end of this month and draw a vast number of runners to the the city. However, among the most hurtful barbs thrown was the allegation by former mayor Michael Crowe that the organisers did not honour a commitment to donate marathon funds to sporting clubs and athletes in the city which has been angrily rejected by the organisers and proven to be untrue.

Tough conditions for bog week cycle

Strong winds and heavy rain made the going really tough in Tully Cross for the first Bog Week two-day stage race. JJ Flaherty of Western Lakes CC was the race director for the weekend. A smaller than usual turnout from the Connacht cycling clubs didn't dampen the racing even if the rain did.

Entries closing for Sea2Summit race

The inaugural Westport Sea2Summit adventure race is designed to suit all levels of fitness and interests with a mix of road running, cycling, and a mountain hike, including the challenging terrain of Croagh Patrick with the backdrop of Clew Bay. It will finish with a short sea run and small obstacle challenge before arriving at the Fairgreen. This challenge offers participants a choice of two routes; the supreme event which offers all of the intensity of the ultimate adventure race, or the spirit event which will certainly appeal to those of relative fitness yet wanting to challenge themselves and push their personal fitness levels. The supreme relay event will take place over the same route and at the same time as the solo supreme race. Teams will be of three people and they will share the disciplines in whatever way they wish.
